Ethnocentric Approach to the study of Culture

In society people whose vision is limited to his or her own desires and needs are generally not effective  in dealing with other people.Such individuals are egocentric and not suited to develop cultural and social relationship between people of different attitudes in society.A person who judges other cultures solely in terms of his or her own culture  is ethnocentric  and this attitude defined  in a person is ethnocentrism.

Ethnocentrism infuses a feeling that one's own group has values and a pattern of values superior to all others. When this is defined there is generalised contempt for the members of other groups.Manifestation of ethnocentrism may make a person to adopt an attiutude of superiority or even hostility towards others.Ethnocentrism in society may be expressed by discrimination, verbal aggression or hostility .An ethnocentric person cannot do anthropological work as one has to be free from all biases and subjectivities. It cannot hinder one's understanding of the ways of life and customs of other people.
